Exhibition showcases prototypes to help blind and partially sighted

October 18, 2007

Queen Alexandra College (QAC) in Birmingham is the next stop for an international exhibition which will showcase prototypes of everyday items to make life easier for people who are blind or partially sighted.

QAC and the London based Czech Centre are working together to host ‘Design Beyond Sight’ - an interactive exhibition showing how the design of essential household objects can make the world of difference to someone without sight.

The exhibition will run from October 18 - November 13, 2007, and will give people in Birmingham the first chance to see how items such as gadgets for the kitchen, credit card holders and board games have been created by students from the Czech and Slovak Republics - where their work focussed on projects involving sight loss.

Alex Mellon, Principal at QAC, said: “It is very fitting that the exhibition should be hosted by QAC, as we are a college, which works directly with the people that these items are aimed at.

“We are excited to have the exhibition at the college, and we want people to come along and see what it’s all about. I hope this exhibition will help people to understand how small changes to a design can have such a big impact on the way everyday items are used by people who are blind or visually impaired.”
The exhibition will be held in the Atrium of the Bradbury Centre at QAC, Court Oak Road, Harborne, Birmingham, B17 9TG. It is open from 9.00 am - 5.00 pm (weekdays only). Admission is free.
