Louis Braille Birthday Celebrations

Louis Braille Birthday Celebrations
Kiefer Sutherland, David Schwimmer, Janet Jackson and Cindy Crawford have all made their mark by 43 years of age. Louis Braille was 43 when he died but his system of reading using raised dots was never taught to the children in the school where he worked until after his death. Nevertheless the system that Braille, blinded as a toddler by a freak accident, introduced to the world has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people throughout the past 150 years.

To celebrate Braille’s 200th birthday, QAC Students invited local school students, members of the community, businesses and professionals to see at first hand how Braille is used in the 21st century.

Students demonstrated how to write and read Braille using both traditional and modern technology. There were fun challenges for newcomers to Braille and the chance to take away a key ring tagged with Braille. A large birthday cake decorated with ‘Smartie’ Braille dots was also shared with visitors.

College Manager Ray Piggott said “using Braille is so important to many of our students in their day to day life. Not only is it vital in college studies but also when out and about. Too many organisations and businesses don’t give much thought to providing Braille signs and information even though it is the law. We hope that introducing people to Braille in a fun way will show that 200 years after his death, Louis Braille’s invention is still significant.”

QAC receives ‘Best Companies’ recognition

QAC has won recognition as ‘One to Watch’ from the prestigious Best Companies organisation.

Recognition of this kind means that in addition to its commitment to delivering a high quality of service to its students, QAC is also a great place to work. A candid staff survey, overseen by the Best Companies organisation, along with a rigorous evaluation of the organisation identified the wide range of strengths that QAC offers as an employer and within the community.

QAC Principal, Mr Alex Mellon said “We are all delighted that our joint efforts have been recognised by Best Companies. The work we do is rewarding in itself, but making sure that QAC provides an excellent working environment is key to everything we do. We are determined that each year QAC will move higher in the best companies chart and from being ‘one to watch’ will become one to follow”.
