Work Placement Case Study - Multi-Trades

Case Study 1:

NAME: Max, Tyrone, Aadam, Tyler and Reiss

PLACEMENT: Edgbaston Archery and Tennis Society

ROLE: Groundskeeper

The students were involved in a range of tasks whilst onsite including ground clearance, sanding astroturf court, raking leaves off the courts, painting a shed to upcycle it, hedge trimming, leaf clearing using rakes and leaf blower and general weeding across the grounds.

Multi-Trades student Reiss stated, “I enjoyed work placement and liked being outside doing different tasks. I learnt some new skills, and it gave me confidence and helped me improve my communication skills. I would like to return and do some more work placement.”

The employer commented, “What a great job the lads have done. Super attitude and enthusiasm. They have mainly cleared hedge clippings I have cut but also moved back a compost heap and swept up leaves – not the most exciting work, but crucial to the club. After this autumn leaf stuff, hoping to find a variety of tasks to keep them going over winter. I have really enjoyed their company, and they have done super work for the club.”

Students have been able to experience what it's like to be in the working world, listening to and following instructions given. Working in a team and being able to collaborate with other peers. Understanding the importance of the skills needed to be able to work in employment. This has provided evidence of work placement to go towards the student's qualification which will go on their CV’s

LEAP Hub Multi-Trades is a practical-based programme that focuses on developing a range of transferable skills in our dedicated workshops that will help students to prepare for life after QAC, and progress on to the next steps of their chosen career pathway.

Josh has accessed various work placements which have provided him an insight into possible job opportunities following his time at QAC, this included work placements where he has worked with other students to paint a community centre and also make bird boxes which were donated to West Smethwick Park.

Josh visited Pitts Wood with other students to carry out a range of tasks, including removing holly to clear the pathways around the woodland. During the placement, Josh would be allocated a set of new tasks to complete to keep the area conserved each week.
