How to Stay Safe with Sight Loss - A practical safety seminar

If you or someone you know is visually impaired and concerned about safety and security in all areas and aspects of their life, then join Andrew Palmer, founder of Verse One Safety and one of the UK's leading vision impairment speakers and presenters. In this informative session you will learn practical hints, tips, tricks and techniques so you can stay safe and avoid becoming the victim of crime. This fast-paced 40 minute Safety Masterclass will cover: • Personal safety and confidence when out and about • Home safety and property security • Safe travel and public transport awareness • Scam awareness and how to avoid common frauds • Mobile phone and technology safety • Mobility awareness and safer navigation • Situational awareness and recognising potential risks • Essential strategies to maintain independence and confidence Crime may be up, but your confidence does not have to be down. This is likely to be one of the most important safety seminars you will ever attend, providing strategies that can be used immediately in everyday situations. Pakflatt's mission is to enable all citizens to vote independently!

Pakflatt's mission is to enable all citizens to vote independently, in secret and with confidence. They will deliver a presentation showcasing how their patented McGonagleฎ Reader audio and touch navigation system (MGR) can transform the experience of voters, including those who have never felt able to vote before. Widely tested and proven with blind and partially sighted people, the MGR achieved a 93% success rate in tests by the RNIB. It has also been tested successfully with others including adult literacy groups, people who can speak but cannot read English text and individuals with neurodiversity.

Dr Birthe Hilgen, a Senior Research Associate at Newcastle University, who is working on Retina UK-funded projects with Prof Majlinda Lako will tell us about the latest news from her project. You will also learn about the variety of support Retina UK provides for those affected by inherited sight loss as well as how you can get involved with the charity.
